AMD Quad-Core Phenom X4 9850 Reviewed (Verdict: Owned by Intel Quad Cores) [Amd]

The Phenom X4 9850 is AMD’s latest quad-core chip. It’s free of the performance-sapping bug that plagued the first batch of Phenoms, and AMD hopes it’ll claw back some ground from Intel. Maximum PC stacked it up against two quad-cores from Intel—the mid-rangeish Penryn Core 2 Quad Q9300, as well as an older Core 2 Q6600. Ouchies for AMD, the Intel pair blew past it.
The Penryn-based Q9300 “owned the night,” with the Q6600 trailing, and Phenom in back of both. It wasn’t “so far behind as to be dead in the water” but “it doesn’t quite go head-to-head with the Penryn lite.” (They call the Q9300 Penryn-lite because it has half the cache of the higher-end Penryn quad-cores.)
The 9850 X4 is the fastest AM2 chip around, however, so if you’re sticking with that board “it’s a pretty good upgrade.” The bigger problem is that AMD still has nothing to […]

Adobe Photoshop Express Now Live: Free Online Photoshop for Everyone [Adobe Photoshop]

Adobe’s Photoshop Express, its free, online version of Photoshop is live right now. Targeted at everyday consumers, it’s Photoshop stripped down to a pretty slick Flash 9-powered web app we got a demo of earlier today. It’s super easy to crop, adjust saturation or exposure, or perform several other simple, but solid photo tweaks, like pop color (pictured). You won’t be doing any heavy lifting with it, since you can’t work with layers, add text or do anything really awesome, like amazing Giz-style comic bubbles, but your mom will be able to make her pictures look better than ever.

Dash Launches Express on Amazon, Drops Price to $400 [GPS]

These days, all but the most high-end (that is, overpriced) Garmin nuvis cost below $600, so it’s great news that Dash—that fascinating experiment in “connected” GPS—has lowered the price of the Express from $600 to $400, and is selling them immediately on Amazon.com. If you pre-ordered, fear not: You will only be charged $400. Friends-and-family types who got devices early will be reimbursed the extra $200. If you want the instant traffic data, the wireless web searches and the periodic upgrades, you’ll still have to pay that $10 to $13 subscription fee, but if you’re a real cheapskate, you can let the free trial lapse and use it sans connectivity. Press release after the jump. [Amazon; Dash]

T-Sketch Shirt Illuminates Your Immature Thoughts [T-shirts]

I can only imagine the kinds of despicable things one could do with a shirt that allows the wearer to write or draw on a chest display. Plus, everything you write will automatically activate a backlight that can be changed from a gentle glow all the way up to a pulsing strobe. The product page suggests putting your phone number on it to lure in the ladies—but what kind of tool would do that? Probably the same kind of tool that would consider buying this thing. Coming soon for £29.99 (about $60). [Gadgets.co.uk and Thumbsup.uk via GeekAlerts]
