How-To: Use Time Machine with an Airport Extreme [Apple]

newVideoPlayer(”time_machine_airport_disk_3.flv”, 475, 376,”");
We happen to use an 802.11n AirPort Extreme as our router, so we put today’s new firmware upgrade to the test to see if TIme Machine really does work with AirPort Disk. As expected, it works and only requires a few simple steps…
First we updated our firmware using the AIrport Base Station Utility, then we plugged in our external HDD.
Next, we logged into our AIrport Extreme using Finder, clicked on the folder representing our external disk and finally, we fired up Time Machine.
After that, it was smooth sailing. It should be noted that Airport Express never supported AIrport Disk, and therefore doesn’t work with TIme Machine.

NYT: Apple Discussing iTunes All-You-Can-Eat Downloads With Labels Next Week [ITunes]

The New York Tiimes’ Saul Hansell backs up the Financial Times report that Apple’s looking at all-you-can-eat downloads for iTunes. According to his source, Apple is sitting down with the studios next week for an undoubtedly tense poker-faced showdown.
Universal’s the biggest proponent of selling subs, so they’ll probably be there. Reportedly Apple wants to throw the labels $20 a device, which is only a little more than what the labels make off an iPod now in music sales, so they’ve got some gaping chasms to negotiate across. [Bits]

The Secret to Dash GPS’s Live Traffic Data: Networked Crowdsourcing [GPS]

We’re excited about the upcoming Dash Express GPS because it corrects so much of what’s gone wrong with in-car navigation. In the end, you get the same green, yellow and red traffic indicators on highways that Google maps gets, plus that on some local roads. No other GPS has this. Because each unit is basically a two-way pager, it records the traffic you experience and shares it with others. It’s a simple idea, perhaps, but to really harness the potentially unwieldy power of crowdsourcing, you need rules:
1. Each Dash Express anonymously and automatically sends its position and speed back to the Dash servers
2. Dash also receives traffic info from road sensors, commercial fleets and other sources through our partnership with Inrix [shown in dotted colored lines]
3. Dash then calibrates these sources against “ground truth” provided by the Dash devices actually driving the roads every day [shown in solid colored lines]
4. […]

USB Gadget Display is Like Vista Sideshow, but Supports Windows XP [Usb Gadget]

When is Vista Sideshow not Vista Sideshow? When it does the same thing as Sideshow—display little widgets on an external device—but doesn’t use Vista’s Gadgets. The USB Gadget Display does look like a little 2-inch LCD display, which shows clocks and various other things like CPU and RAM usage (but mostly clocks) outside of your machine, but it works with Windows XP, something Sideshow can’t claim. Though, looking at the quality of these widgets, it might be worth it for you to upgrade to Vista. [Everything USB]

Apple Time Machine Now Works With AirPort Disk [Apple]

Apple issued a firmware update for the Airport Extreme today that allows any USB hard drive connected to the router to function with Time Machine. It’s nice for those with MacBooks and external HDDs who find it troublesome to have to plug and unplug their drive everytime they take their lappy on the go. [TUAW]
