After geohot published his method on hardware unlocking the iPhone, a web site called iphonesimfree came out of nowhere to announce that their group had successfully managed to unlock the phone via a software method. Fact or fiction?

The iPhone has been successfully software unlocked.

Fact, it turns out. So says Engadget.
“iPhoneSIMfree.com team called us up to prove their claim that they cracked Apple’s iPhone SIM lock system, and prove it they did. (No, we don’t have a copy of the unlock software, so don’t even ask us, ok?) The six-man team has been working non-stop since launch day, and they’re officially the first to break Apple’s SIM locks on the iPhone with software. It’s done. Seriously.”
According to Engadget, the software unlock not only allows any SIM card to be used in the iPhone, but is also “restore and upgrade resistant” as well as being lightning and fire immune.
